i come from down in the valley

me and mary we met in high school
when she was just seventeen
we'd ride out of that valley down to where the fields were green

and for my nineteenth birthday i got a union card and a wedding coat

but lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy
now all them things that seemed so important

mary acts like she don't care
but i remember us riding in my brother's car
her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
at night on them banks i'd lie awake
and pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse

or is it something worse

vengo de la parte baja del valle,
donde, cuando eres joven
te enseñan a hacer las cosas
de la misma forma q las hacia tu padre
maría y yo nos conocimos en el instituto
cuando ella tan solo tenía 17
escapamos de este valle
hacia donde los campos eran verdes.

solíamos ir al rio
y en el rio nos sumergíamos
solíamos dejarnos llevar
por su corriente.

pasó el tiempo,
y maría quedó embarazada
y para mi 19 cumpleaños,
me regalaron un contrato de trabajo y un traje de boda.
fuimos al juzgado,
y el juez hizo el resto.
sin sonrisas de día de boda,
sin paseo hacia el altar,
ni flores ni traje de novia.

tengo un trabajo en la construcción
para la compañía johnston
pero últimamente dicen que la cosa está mal
debido a la economía y todo eso.
ahora, todas aquellas cosas
que antes eran importantes para mí
parecen desvanecerse en el aire
yo actuo como si no recordara nada del pasado,
y maría como si no le importara.
pero aún recuerdo aquellas escapadas que
haciamos en el coche de mi hermano
si. recuerdo su bronceado y húmedo cuerpo
yacer a mi lado, tumbados por las noches
a la orilla del lago.
solía tumbarme cerca de ella,
para oirla respirar a mi lado.

todos esos recuerdos
vuelven a mi persiguiéndome
como una maldición
es un sueño, una mentira
si no se hace realidad.
o es algo peor lo que me envía hacia el río.
